Letter from Janet Webb
President of the Flute Society of NSW
Hi fellow flautists,
I am very honoured to have been appointed as the new President of the Flute Society of NSW and look forward to meeting you all.
I would like to thank our outgoing President, Henry Liang who has done a fabulous job, as has his wonderful committee. A warm welcome also to our new committee members.
My name is Janet Webb and for the past 34 years, I have been the principal flute of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Prior to that, I was the principal flute of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. I hope to share my experiences and knowledge as an orchestral, solo and chamber musician and as a teacher.
We will be continuing our annual events next year such as our Gala Day in March as well as our Flute Eisteddfod in June. I urge members of all levels to come along to our Gala Day. Everyone gets to play in a supportive and educational atmosphere, it will be a fun day for all!
We also hope to continue to offer a grant for flute related projects. This year’s winners are:
– Rosalie Bourne – for developing a breathing workshop
– Gabrielle Cadenhead – a composer and performer of contemporary flute music
– Sarah Monk – a composer writing for mixed ability flute groups
– Chloe Chung – for making a video on body awareness (Alexander method)
Stay tuned for other events throughout the year.
We will be continuing with the e-newsletter to keep you informed, not only of our upcoming events but also of other concerts, news from the world-wide flute community and interesting articles. If you think there is anything that might be of interest for each Newsletter, please send it to our newsletter editor, Mark Xiao at mark@flutesandflutists.com.
If you haven’t done so already, please consider helping us by joining as Financial Members. It’s a bargain at $5 and entitles you to vote at our Annual General Meeting (AGM)! You can still sign-up for free though and benefit from our Newsletter and support from the community. For more information, please visit www.flutesocietynsw.org.au.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all next year.
Best wishes
Janet Webb
