This unique style is Lillian Burkart’s most innovative. The air stream is quickly excited and the player achieves exceptional response and projection.

The embouchure shape focuses the tone, resulting in an energetic and direct sound. This style provides a distinctive resonating core throughout all three registers of the flute. The M2 model produces a robust tone and an unprecedented dynamic range.

Celebrating the success of Verne Q. Powell’s original design, the 1927 headjoint brings all the color and clarity found in vintage Powell Flutes to the present day. Upon starting his own company in 1927, Verne Q. Powell established an iconic American sound that had both nuance and charm. 95 years later, we’ve taken a modern approach to his ideas, modifying Verne’s original concept to give the power and projection needed by flutists today.

Philharmonic

The Philharmonic is the iconic Powell sound; rich, deep, and intriguing. Offering the most resistance of all our styles, the Philharmonic features a broad, smooth lip plate reminiscent of the Louis Lot flutes. This style offers an extensive palette of colors which are perfect for blending with other instrument families in a symphony orchestra.

Feeling perhaps more dangerous, with moments of exhilaration, this headjoint is designed to inspire, challenge and spark the creativity and imagination of the flutist, allowing the discovery of new destinations for your sound and music-making.

Soloist

With a wide range of dynamics and characteristics, the Soloist is the sports car of headjoints. Sleek and simple with its narrow, curved lip plate, this style is incredibly flexible. Designed for the player who demands precision and performance.

The powerhouse of our headjoint offerings, the Venti style combines the response of the Soloist with the richness of the Philharmonic. This style has a broad lip plate with a steep front angle, producing fantastic response and projection.

WHISTLE HEADJOINT

The Abell Whistle Headjoint is an end-blown, fipple style headjoint which offers a new and unique voice for the flutist. It is designed to fit any Boehm-system flute and to play comfortably through the full range of the instrument.

The Abell Whistle Headjoint orients the flute vertically providing a more balanced and centered position. This orientation relaxes the upper body, opening the lungs and diaphragm. Options for supporting the flute vertically include thumb rests, neck straps and combinations of the two.

The headjoint is also a practical option for flutists who can no longer play the instrument in the horizontal position, or who are unable to form an embouchure.

The Abell Whistle Headjoint is manufactured from fully seasoned tropical hardwoods and Sterling silver.
